Oacoma
While Oacoma may be a great place to stay or to live, if you are looking for a lot of action and attractions in this town, you might be disappointed. Oacoma isn't the tourist town that many others in the area are, and that is reflected in both the people that live there and the activities that are available. Most popular, in season of course, are hunting and fishing, which are activities enjoyed by both locals and visitors to the area.
Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center
At this unique museum you can learn about the Akta Lakota tribe that has called this region home for thousands of years. Inside the museum you can see art and displays from Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota tribes. On the outer walls of the center portraits of ten Lakota and Dakota chiefs bring the past to life. The Cultural Center was once part of St. Joseph's Indian School but was made into a museum after classes were downsized and moved to different locations. The museum strives to preserve the culture of the Lakota people and to share their contributions with an entirely new audience. Roam Free Park
If you want a beautiful view of the sunset while in Oacoma, then you must take time to enjoy the hike to Roam Free Park. The park is set in the Missouri River bluffs of the area and offers amazing views any time of the day. Dirt hiking trails are lightly maintained, and many of them are handicap accessible.
American Creek North Park
This park is a fabulous place to spend a hot summer afternoon. Grill up some burgers and enjoy lunch at the picnic tables in the pavilion, then sit and enjoy the sunshine while the kids play. Dad can head down to the creek and do some fishing, while the kids swim at the beach. Younger children will enjoy the playground equipment. The entire park is handicap accessible.
Casinos
There are several different casinos located in and around Oacoma. The Lodestar Casino offers card games, slot machines, and a delicious eatery for both locals and visitors. The Golden Buffalo Casino offers much the same. These two casinos provide options and relaxation for parents on any Black Hills vacation.
